The Duchess of Sussex was doted on by her father Thomas Markle Snr while growing up, being much younger than his two other children – Samantha and Thomas Jnr. In fact, Samantha was already 17 years old when Meghan was born. According to the 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, Meghan was the “apple of her father’s eye” and could do no wrong.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton asserted that her half-sister Samantha “often” claimed Meghan teased her that she was the favourite child and would receive the most expensive gift at Christmas from their father.

 In the summer between graduating high school and starting at university, Meghan apparently fell out with her father, which confused her friends because of how close they were.

Mr Morton wrote: “Meghan went to stay with her mother and did not even visit her father’s house to pick up her mail.

“It was a situation that perplexed her friends, as they knew that Meghan was the apple of her father’s eye and could get away with blue murder.”

He added: “Meghan could twist him round her little finger.”

According to Thomas Jnr, Thomas Snr loved Meghan more than anyone else in the world, including his wife Doria Ragland.

He told Mr Morton: “He was just so so happy. He spent every single minute he could with [Meghan].

“My dad was more in love with her than anyone else in the world and that included Doria.

“She became his whole life, his little princess. He was just blown away by Meghan.” 

Thomas reportedly cared for Meghan so much that her half-sister Samantha felt “jealous” of the attention.

Their father had been absent a lot when she and Thomas Jnr were young and she was likely comparing this to his devotion to the new baby.

Perhaps this could be the source of the apparent feud between the two – Samantha has repeatedly criticised Meghan to the press and even claimed to be writing a book about her.

She was not invited to the Royal Wedding of Meghan and Harry last year – only Meghan’s mother Doria was in attendance.

Meghan’s parents split when she was just a toddler and divorced five years later.

She initially lived with her mother and spent weekends with her father, but later moved to permanently live with Thomas.

As she grew up, his soft spot for Meghan remained; he even started volunteering to help with school productions she was in during her early acting years.

Equally, she spent a lot of time in his world – the set of the hit TV show ‘Married… with Children’, where he was the lighting director.

Every day after school, Meghan would go to the set and sit on the studio floor waiting for her father to take her home.

In 2013, Meghan recalled those days to Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show, calling is a “perverse” place for a teenage girl at Catholic school.

She said: “It’s a very perverse place for a little girl, who went to Catholic school no less, to grow up.”
