Revealed: Princess Diana’s outrageous birthday surprises for Prince William
Prince William is now the same age as Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who turned 37 in January. He was welcomed by parents Princess Diana and Prince Charles at the Lindo Wing on June 211982. The Duchess of Cambridge has reportedly given her husband a sweet family gift of photos and drawings from their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis today – however, Diana had some outrageous surprises lined up for her teenage son.
When the prince turned 13 in 1995, Diana ordered a custom-made cake for William’s big day -– in the shape of a pair of breasts.
The prince did not just have the naughty cake waiting for him when he got home from school, either, but also supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady, speaking in 2018, said: “I remember that day really well because the Princess said they were coming.
“I was super excited and I wanted to meet them too but I didn’t get the chance.”
He continued: ”I came into work that morning and went down to the refrigerator, opened the door and I was just confronted with the biggest pair of boobs I’ve ever seen in my life.
“The Princess had ordered a boobs cake for William’s 13th birthday. I wish I’d taken a photograph of it!
“I didn’t know anything about it, I just thought, ‘Oh my gosh.’
“I asked the butler, ‘What on earth is this?’ and he said the Princess had ordered it for William’s birthday.
“The Princess loved embarrassing people in the nicest way, in a fun way, whether it was telling a dirty, risqué joke – which usually got me.
“William just went bright-red.”
Speaking to Channel 5 in 2007, Prince William said: “There’s a couple of memories that I have that are particularly funny.
“Just outside of this room where we are now, she organised when I came home from school, to have Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs.
“I was a 12 or 13-year-old boy who had posters of them on his wall, and I went bright red and didn’t quite know what to say and sort of fumbled – I think I pretty much fell down the stairs on the way up.
“I was completely and utterly awestruck.
“That was a very funny memory that has lived with me forever about her.”
Mr McGrady explained, however, that William had got slightly mixed up in his retelling.
He said: “William was a little bit mixed up in his interview. He said he had Cindy Crawford over but it was actually Claudia Schiffer.”
In a more low-key event, Kate Middleton – who shares a love of fancy dress with the prince – reportedly planned an Arabian Nights-themed party for William’s 24th birthday at Highgrove in 2006.
However, William’s 21st birthday party hit the headlines in 2004 for all the wrong reasons when self-styled “comedy terrorist” Aaron Barschak managed to infiltrate the high-profile event.
Dressed as Osama bin Laden in a ballgown, Barschak made it all the way to the prince himself, who was giving a speech on stage, and planted a kiss on his cheek before William reportedly accosted him with the words: “Who the hell are you?”
At that same birthday celebration, which had an “Out of Africa” theme, Kate was reportedly overshadowed by another woman who took pride of place next to the birthday boy.
Katie Nicholl, in her 2010 book “William and Harry”, writes: “At William’s party at Windsor Castle it seemed as though Kate was barely registering on William’s radar.
“He seemed very preoccupied with a pretty girl called Jecca Craig.”
Ms Nicholl adds: “William had apparently had a secret crush on Jecca since the first time he met her.
“She was beautiful, with long blonde hair, deep-blue eyes and legs like a gazelle.
“As Kate raised her champagne flute to toast the birthday prince at the aptly themed Out of Africa celebration at Windsor Castle, it was Jecca who had pride of place next to William at the head table.”
