The devious duo also downed “numerous bottles of wine” at The Mill in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, before they were presented with the £179.20 bill. They left without paying on Monday but were caught on camera, the restaurant owners say.

The management warned the couple they’d go the police if the hefty bill hadn’t have been paid by Tuesday at 4pm.

And the award-winning pub announced on Facebook at 8pm last night the balance had been settled by “an anonymous female”. It is understood she was the girlfriend on the date.

Writing on social media, the bosses said: “Bless, who said romance is dead.

“The bill has been paid by an anonymous female believed to be his girlfriend.”

The Mill was busy with romantic couples celebrating Valentine’s Day on Monday, reports Teesside Live.

It had previously shared on Facebook: “To the lovely couple that racked up a hefty bill consisting of fillet steak and lobster, numerous bottles of wine….

“Whilst we’re sure it was an honest mistake on your part that you left without paying, please pay your bill by 4 o clock today.

“You were sat opposite a camera and the CCTV couldn’t be clearer.”

And, in response, many of its loyal customers shared their anger at the behaviour.

One woman wrote: “There is no need for it, businesses are struggling enough. If you can’t afford to go out until you get paid, don’t go out, it’s so wrong.”

Another comment states: “How do people have the guts to do this?”

A third posted: “This is absolutely disgusting.”
