Republic unveil plans to protest against King Charles after Coronation arrests

King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to be met with anti-monarchist protestors during their upcoming trip to Edinburgh. The royals will visit Scotland next month where they will be presented with Honours of Scotland at St Giles’s Cathedral. But campaign group Republic looks set to scupper the celebrations branding as they brand it a “pointless vanity parade”.

The King and Queen will receive an award following a ‘people’s procession’ before a fly-over by the Red Arrows.

Announcing their plans to protest, Republic’s Graham Smith said: “We are back. We will not be deterred from protesting by the arrests at the coronation, and will continue to make the voices of millions of Republicans heard around the UK.”

The protest will be the first since the King’s Coronation last month where campaigners launched into a chant of “not my King”.

Mr Smith added: “This pointless vanity parade in Edinburgh will cost Scottish taxpayers millions of pounds, and for what? So Charles can once again be centre of attention for a day.”

He continued: “Everyone in the UK should have the right to choose our head of state – not be told it will be Charles.

“Charles does not represent the people of Scotland any more than he represents the rest of the UK.”

“Fewer than 10 percent of people in Britain were enthusiastic about the coronation.

“It’s unlikely Scots will be that interested in this farcical ceremony. Shouldn’t we instead be celebrating ordinary people, people who have achieved something, and the power of people to govern ourselves and shape our own lives?”

During the King’s Coronation, the Metropolitan Police made 64 arrests for offences including affray, public order offences, breach of the peace and conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

Mr Smith said membership of Republic almost doubled in the week following the arrests and benefited from more than £80,000 in donations and sales.

In Edinburgh, hundreds of people gathered on Calton Hill for an anti-monarchy rally.

Scotland Yard later expressed “regret” over the arrests of protestors.
