Remainers hurl abuse as Ann Widdecombe and Brexit Party arrive in London

Brexit firebrand Ann Widdecombe spearheaded an entourage of chipper British MEPs buoyed in the knowledge it would be their last-ever journey from Brussels to London as members of the European Union. But as the group arrived on British soil they were heckled by angry members of the public. One woman even threatened to spit at Ms Widdecombe in a shocking and repugnant attack caught on video by Express.co.uk.

Speaking to Express.co.uk shortly after the vulgar act, a defiant Ms Widdecombe said: It’s tremendous. We have walked out of the European Parliament for the last time today.

“We have been waiting for this day for a very long time.

“Nigel Farage has been working for it for 25 years. But today our duty is done. Our harvest is home.”

Of the unprovoked abuse towards pro-Brexit MEPs, a Brexit Party spokesman told Express.co.uk: “We condemn all acts of aggression and abuse in any form. We hope Remainers and Leavers can come together today to celebrate this constitutional milestone.”

Speaking outside St Pancras as his colleagues posed for photos, Brexit Party MEP Rupert Lowe, also undeterred, shared his thoughts on a historic day for Great Britain.

He said: “It has been a long fight. I have really enjoyed it. I am not a politician but I have enjoyed participating in the Parliament.

“And there are some great people in the European Parliament. It is just that it is structurally wrong.

“We are not leaving Europe. We are leaving the European Union.

“It is now down to Boris Johnson and his team to deliver on their promises and do what they were elected to do, which is to represent the interests of the British people.

“And if they fail to that, then woe betide them!”

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has maintained his organisation will be kept on standby should Boris Johnson renege on his pledge to secure the best deal for Brexit Britain.

In a warning to the Prime Minister Ms Widdecombe insisted the Brexit Party would “be watching” the Conservative Party leader’s every move.

She said: “The rest is down to Boris. The big question is: is he going to match his actions with his words? Now, he didn’t do that in October.

“So the question is: will he this year? And that is why you still need the Brexit Party – because we will be watching.

“And we will make sure the public knows what is happening.”

EU POLL: Which country will join the UK and quit the EU next? [POLL]

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has insisted the UK and the EU must seek a Brexit trade relationship “on a level playing field”.

In a speech in the European Parliament in Brussels, Ms von der Leyen told the UK “we will always love you and we will never be far”.

She added: “Only in the agony of parting do we look into the depth of love.”

Referring to Ms von der Leyen’s vision for the UK’s trade relationship with the EU, Ms Widecombe raged: “We do not want a level playing field. It is the ability to compete.

“And that, of course, is what they are so scared of.”
