‘Remainer red herring’ dismantled as Boris Johnson warned Parliament to ‘hamper’ EU talks

The Remainer argument that Brexiteers “didn’t know what they voted for” was dismantled by politics expert Paul Baldwin and Standup4Brexit Director Rebecca Ryana as they reflected on the uphill battle Boris Johnson will have to face. This week on Brexit the Final Countdown host Rebecca Hutson was joined by Head of News at Express.co.uk Paul Baldwin, Brussels correspondent Joe Barnes and Standup4Brexit founder Rebecca Ryan. Ms Ryan concluded that Brexiteers were aware of how difficult the EU would be during negotiations and were prepared to accept a no deal Brexit.

Express.co.uk’s Head of News Mr Baldwin added that the electorate is always forced to vote on a principle as a political party’s stance may change three years down the line ultimately making party allegiances difficult.

Mr Baldwin said: “It’s a bit of a Remainer Red Herring.

“Because when you vote in a general election you don’t know what policy is going to come three years down the line.

“You don’t know, you absolutely don’t know what that party are going to do in the next three or four years.“

“You don’t because the party probably doesn’t.”

“So what you are voting for is a principle.

“And to say: we didn’t know everything is questionable.

“Because how long is the question going to be, if there is a second referendum, how long is the question going to be and how detailed.

“Is it going to every bit of the EU because that will be a 500-page document and we know that because we have seen it.”

Ms Ryan added: “I think the view that people who voted Leave but didn’t vote for no deal is completely wrong.

“If you think about all of the project fear that was pumped out through the original referendum campaign.

“The people who voted for Leave knew exactly what the EU were like.

“They knew how belligerent they would be, they knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“People say in the main campaign they said it is going to be a straight forward deal and it should be possible to have a straight forward deal technically because we are already aligned.

“But Leavers knew what the EU is like that is why we voted to Leave, we didn’t think they would be this lovely friendly organisation that was going to make it easier for us.”

Brussels correspondent Joe Barnes was asked the European Union’s reaction to the Supreme Court decision and what this could mean for future Brexit talks.

He said: “The political theatre and chaos has again brought dark rainclouds.

“There is a very bleak mood in Brussels as they see it MPs have always voted for what they don’t want but they have never told Brussels what they want.

“Now MPs are being brought back into the equation that is going to hamper Boris Johnson trying to do a deal with the European negotiators.

“There is an avid atmosphere of uncertainty and an element of chaos that again just adds to the quagmire.”
