Remainer MP stunned after by-election defeat – Brits not listening to ‘decimated’ Labour

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused Boris Johnson of “gambling with peoples’ lives as he claims food prices could increase in the event of no deal. Labour MP Anneliese Dodds amplified this statement by highlighting the impacts of a no deal Brexit on ordinary Brits. The Sky News Stephen Dixon said: “You say it is bad news for those ordinary families in that sense, yes, but many of those ordinary families voted for Brexit.”

The Labour MP replied: “It feels like some politicians like Boris Johnson are still proposing a no deal Brexit because they won’t be deeply affected because they have a high income.

“They would be kind of prepared for this but many other people wouldn’t.

“About two-thirds of British families don’t have any savings, not enough savings for a rainy day, not enough to deal with losing a job or a significant increase in cost.”

The Sky News host quickly responded: “But isn’t the point Ms Dodds with a lot of this is that whatever you say people aren’t listening to you?

“To the Labour Party when it comes to Brexit.

“As we saw with the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election and the results last night.

“Labour’s vote absolutely decimated.”

The Labour Remainer answered: “Well obviously it became a tight contest between the Liberal Democrats.

“That is not a seat that Labour has held for a very long time.

“I’m not going to be complacent about it, would I have liked to have won it? Of course, I would have.”

Boris Johnson suffered humiliation in his first test as Conservative leader as his party were beaten by the Liberal Democrats, who secured the key seat in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

The new Prime Minister saw the Tories collect just 39 percent of the votes in a humbling defeat.

The Liberal Democrats secured the majority of votes with the party gaining 43.5 percent votes. It was also an embarrassing night for Labour who came in fourth place behind the Brexit Party.

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson predicted further electoral pacts between pro-EU parties following the success in Brecon and Radnorshire.

She said the result sent a “really clear message that the country doesn’t have to settle for Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn, there is another positive alternative that is winning again and on the up and that is the Liberal Democrats”.

Ms Swinson told BBC Radio 4’s Today: “I do think that working across party lines is important when there is so much at stake for the future of our country and I will continue to do that.

“I’ve exchanged messages this morning with the Green and Plaid leaderships and I think there will be more co-operation in future elections.”
