Netflix has confirmed the date when their hit royal drama series, The Crown, will release its next instalment this year, focusing on Diana, in what could be an “interesting” start to Charles’s reign. The streaming giant halted production for a day after the late Queen’s death was announced, and on the day of the late monarch’s state funeral.

But Netflix will stick by the original airing date of the fifth series despite the brief pauses in filming, the streaming giant has confirmed.

The new series, which will feature Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, will be available to watch on November 9.

It will see Elizabeth Debicki play Princess Diana, and Dominic West as Charles as the season focuses on their public separation.

The role of Diana had been played by Emma Corrin, while Charles was portrayed by Josh O’Connor.

Jonathan Pryce will play the late Duke of Edinburgh, taking over from Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.

The Queen had previously been played by Olivia Colman and Claire Foy.

The series had been expected to end after the fifth series, but it is now scheduled for an additional series.

The fifth and sixth series will see depictions of the Prince of Wales, 40, and Prince Harry, 38, for the first time in the show.

Royal watchers on social media have had a mixed reaction to the announcement of the release date, coming days after the Queen’s state funeral on Monday.

One Twitter user, @hecallsmePP wrote that Charles “just became king so that’s gonna be an interesting start to his reign”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s unofficial biographer, Omid Scobie, posted: “The episodes will focus on Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, and the treatment of Princess Diana.”

The date of the fifth series’ airing was announced during Netflix’s Tudum event, publicising a number of series and films to be featured on the streaming platform.

Netflix released a brief teaser trailer for the fifth series, in which Elizabeth Debicki, as Diana, can be seen having makeup applied as announcements ring out of her separation from Charles.

The couple first made their separation public in 1992.

The clip finishes with the words “all out war”, as voices of media outlets discussing the separation overlay the shots of Ms Debicki and Dominic West as Charles.

Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip alongside Claire Foy’s interpretation of the Queen, described how he previously met both the now-King Charles and his grandson.

He told NBC News that Prince Harry, who he recalled meeting during a polo match, greeted him in reference to the Duke of Edinburgh.

He recounted how the Duke of Sussex addressed the actor as “Granddad”.

It is not known whether members of the Royal Family have watched the series focusing on their lives, but Mr Smith commented that he believed the late Queen had been a fan.

He remarked that the Queen was believed to watch the show projected onto a larger screen at the weekend, but that Prince Philip did not watch the hit series.
