The Red Arrows are known for their aeronautical acrobatics, trailing brightly coloured vapour trails behind them as they fly. With a range of stunts, and numerous events across the year, often Brits flock to witness the famous planes whenever they take to the skies.

Today the Red Arrows will be flying across parts of the UK, as they take part in flight training.

There are 11 Red Arrows display pilots, who are fast jet pilots from front line Royal Air Force squadrons.

The Red Arrows are a crucial part of the Air Force’s displays, primarily for flight safety.

The vapour trails – often vibrantly coloured red, white and blue – allow Red 1 to judge wind speed and direction.

They also work for the aircraft to locate each other in the second half of the show, when different sections of the formation are frequently several miles apart.

Due to coronavirus, displays across the UK have been postponed or cancelled, leaving many Red Arrows enthusiasts waiting for the next opportunity to see them fly.

However, on Monday, September 7, the jets will take flight for training, and those in the area will be able to witness as this happens.

Where to see the Red Arrows flypast today

The planes will set off from their base of RAF Scampton at 9.20am, home of the Red Arrows since 1983.

They will then fly around Lincolnshire, passing over Glentham, Louth, Donna Nook before heading over the North Sea.

Then the jets will head over Horncastle and back to Scampton for a two hour break.

Setting off again at 12pm, the planes will follow the same route again, giving lucky nearby residents a second glimpse.

RAF Scampton is famous for its role in the 1943 Dambusters raid – became the home for the Red Arrows in 1983, moving from RAF Kemble – its base since 1966.
