There is fury across the continent with the EU lagging far behind the UK, US and Israel over the number of jabs administered. In Britain, 36.5 percent of the population have received at least one Covid vaccine compared with an average of just 10.5 percent across the EU.
On Twitter, Ms von der Leyen tweeted: “Good discussions with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania Prime Ministers Kaja Kallas, Krišjānis Kariņš and Ingrida Šimonytė.
“Vaccine deliveries are picking up. The EU Commission is ready to assist in the sustained rollout of vaccination.”
However, some social media users responded with mockery and criticism of the EU’s vaccine programme.
Guernsey’s former business minister commented: “Incompetence in the first instance from European Commission.”
Gisele Guarisco, from France, added: “Can Europeans have vaccines rather than shallow words?”
Another user posted: “Could you assist by sending sufficient vaccines to Spain so that ‘herd immunity’ can be achieved?
“What do you mean by ‘picking up’?
“You will be responsible for many deaths.”
A fourth said: “Really, you should resign after the total breakdown of the vaccine supply to EU.
“Political actions/agreements to prevent export restrictions from US and India should have been implemented a long time ago.”
As a result of the UK’s swift vaccine rollout Boris Johnson has announced a staged plan for ending lockdown.
If everything goes to plan all restrictions on socialising in England will be lifted on June 21.

There are calls within the EU for vaccine exports outside the bloc to be banned in response to the sluggish rollout.
Earlier this month Italy blocked the export of 250,000 coronavirus vaccines to Australia.
In response, Australia’s trade minister Dan Tehan criticised the bloc for “vaccine protectionism”.
Back in January the EU threatened to block vaccine exports to the UK following a row with AstraZeneca about vaccine deliveries.
The British-Swedish pharmaceutical giant revealed it would be unable to provide the EU with as many vaccines as hoped due to manufacturing problems at a European factory.
In response, the European Commission demanded the transfer of vaccines produced in the UK and threatened an export ban.
As part of this, they moved to make plans for a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland but backed down following fury in London and Dublin.
On Friday Mario Draghi, the Italian prime minister, admitted his country is expecting a third coronavirus wave.
Restrictions will be tightened across Italy from Monday whilst there will be a national lockdown over the Easter weekend.
