The man, said to be “lucky to be alive” due to the strong tide and the really low temperatures, fell from a tender at the Royal Clarence Marina of Gosport at around 8pm, and was drifted for about 300 metres. He managed to cling on to a pole in the near Millennium Bridge. A dog walker who was crossing the bridge spotted the man after their dog noticed him first.
The hero pooch sensed the danger and started barking furiously to alert its owner and get help.
The walker then contacted 999 and a marine police unit arrived and pulled the man out of the water.
When the man, who is in his mid-50s and believed to be a local, was rescued, he had hypothermia and received first aid treatment by the rescuers – until an ambulance arrived.
Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team and the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Lifeboat Service (GAFIRS) also came on the spot to assist.
Coxswain of GAFIRS, James Baggott said that “the man is incredibly lucky to be alive.” Speaking to Express.co.uk, he added: “During such a cold time of the year no one can last in the water for long and this man was in there for 30 minutes!”
“There was a storm and the wind was blowing in the opposite direction. The sea was very rough. The man definitely wouldn’t make it any more time in the water.
“Thank God he was spotted by the walker, whose dog was going crazy staring at him in the water as they were crossing the bridge. It was dark and he was very difficult to notice, but thankfully the dog was able to spot him.”
A Police spokesman confirmed a unit was sent to rescue the man at the marina near Weevil Lane in Gosport at 8.08pm.
He added: “Officers attended the scene, along with partner agencies, and a man was located in the water and was brought to shore.”
