Diana’s heartbreak over Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla has been well-documented over the years. Although she was also unfaithful, Diana was thought to be particularly devastated by Charles’ relationship with Camilla which he rekindled in 1986. Diana became increasingly erratic as her marriage to Charles fell apart and they drifted from one another.

Howard Hodgson claimed in his 2007 biography, ‘Prince Charles: The Man who will be King’ that Diana used to leave “threatening” messages for Camilla.

He claimed: “In the late Eighties, Camilla Parker Bowles would receive late-night phone calls telling her things like, ‘I’ve sent someone to kill you. They’re outside in the garden. Look out of the window: can you see them?”

Mr Hodgson added: “Mrs Parker Bowles was well aware that it was Diana, although the Princess would never admit as much.

“Nevertheless, as a woman in a large house on her own in the middle of the country it must have been very upsetting.”

Penny Junor then repeated the claims in her 2017 biography about Camilla called ‘The Duchess: The Untold Story’.

Mr Hodgson added that Camilla was not the only person who endured Diana’s aggressive phone calls.

He said that “she never signed them off with her name, but everyone knew that it was her leaving the message”.

Diana had attempted to confront Camilla herself to stop the affair, but it had not gone according to plan.

Her former private secretary Patrick Jephson would receive them regularly.

According to the biographer, a typical message would say: “We know where you are and so does your wife.

“I know you are being disloyal to me.”

Mr Hodgson added that no one addressed Diana about such messages because they were worried that she would cause a “horrible public scene” or get members of staff sacked.

However the Princess of Wales was apparently most difficult towards the children’s nanny Ms Alexandra Legge-Bourke, who was employed to look after Harry and William shortly after the Wales’ split.

The biographer explained: “The Princess was to wage a completely unwarranted campaign against Ms [Tiggy] Legge-Bourke as she wrongly became convinced that the Prince had adopted the nanny as a second mistress.

“This was made all the worse, in her mind, by the face that the boys appeared very fond of Tiggy, which made her insanely jealous.”

However, Tiggy went on working for the royals until 1999, and provided support for Harry and William following their mother’s death.

Prince Charles: The Man who will be King’ by Howard Hodgson was published by John Blake in 2007, and is available here.
