Rare moment of joint laughter between the Queen and Princess Diana revealed
During Diana’s turbulent relationship with the Queen’s son Prince Charles, she broke royal protocol many times, revealing herself to be a bit of a rebel. This is in stark contrast to the Queen’s dogged sense of duty at all costs. Diana reported feeling misunderstood and isolated during her marriage in a tell-all interview with BBC Panorama in 1995.
In the documentary Diana: In her Own Words, the princess claimed she sought help from the Queen in 1986 because she believed “her marriage was loveless” and Charles was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
She claimed the sovereign was less than sympathetic and was no help to her in this dark time.
Meanwhile, Diana spoke to the press and allowed friends of hers to speak to Andrew Morton for his controversial book, which created distance between her and her mother-in-law.
They clearly had great respect for each other’s great work helping others, but due to all these complications, the personal relationship was, at times, a frosty one.
Nevertheless, Daily Mirror photographer Kent Gavin caught a fantastic moment on camera in which the two women shared a laugh together.
They had both arrived at an event in the exact same shade of blue and seemed to find this hilarious.
In the 2013 Amazon prime documentary ‘Royalty Close Up: The Photography of Kent Gavin’, the photographer himself shared the story.
Mr Gavin said: “I can recall on one occasion that the Queen was walking up to Diana and walked past but they’d both dressed in exactly the same colour – matching outfits!
“And you can see the amusement on the Queen’s face and Diana is looking at the Queen, smirking.
“Again, it’s just the expression that she knows and you know you’ve got a great picture, and it’s there in the eyes.”
While it is considered a faux pas for two people to turn up to an event wearing the same or similar outfits, many people have attempted to recreate a number of Diana’s looks since her tragic passing in 1997.
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have both emulated Diana’s distinctive outfits on a number of occasions.

Mr Gavin explained that Diana really knew how to “flirt with the camera” and knew how to make a good picture.
He claimed the Princess of Wales liked him because of his cockney accent and the fact they could have “banter”.
TV presenter and journalist Ann Robinson claimed Diana liked Mr Gavin so much that she might “sulk” the whole way along a line of photographers and then start beaming as soon as she saw her favourite cameraman.
Likewise, the Queen was very accommodating and would move and do things so that the great impact photographs could be taken.
Mr Gavin remembered one time, when the Queen visited a World War Two cemetery on the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings that she showed him how willing she was.
He had asked her press officer beforehand if he could get the Queen to walk away from Prince Philip amongst the gravestones and for her entourage to go the other way, so that he could capture her standing alone.
The press officer apparently said: “Well, how the hell am I going to do that?” and Mr Gavin said: “Just ask her. It’s as simple as that.”
Mr Gavin told the documentary: “And she just walked up there, she looked at the camera – bang, it was done.”
