The “brute” was spotted on the train line at Wishaw. The disruption from the boar lasted several hours and held up many commuters’ journeys.
Wishaw train station serves travel between Glasgow Central and Larkhall.
The wild boar was first sighted shortly after 7:.0pm on Thursday.
ScotRail announced the unusual disruption on their twitter page.
Their first post read: “There’s a pig (yes, you read that right) on the line at Wishaw.
“Police and Network Rail Scotland are trying to capture it right now, so our Glasgow Central – Lanark services won’t be calling at Wishaw for the moment.”
After initial reports of the “beast” being a pig, Angus, the manager for ScotRail’s account, clarified its real species.
They write: “Folks, I’ve just been advised that the beast involved is in fact a wild boar.”
It meant services could not call at Wishaw during the time it was on the loose.
Another Twitter user pointed out there is an abattoir near the track and station.
ScotRail posted again at 9.50pm with the conclusion of the swine saga.
They said: “The wild boar is now safely off the railway and our trains are now able to stop at Wishaw again.”
Twitter users saw the bright side of the unfortunate delays, with many finding it funny.
Stuart Falconer said: “That’s the most exciting thing to happen in Wishy in decades.”

Kenny Croken also made light of the situation, with a picture of Timon from ‘The Lion King’ photoshopped onto a picture of the railway tracks.
Angus from ScotRail reacted to the light hearted joke, saying: “I’ve not been able to verify this photo, but it seems legit.”
Hazel McDonald expressed her sympathies for Angus having to deal with the wild boar.
She wrote: “Oh Angus, you’re having to deal with everything possible this week.”
