Prince William and Kate are readying themselves to one day become King and Queen consort. The pair have in recent years ramped up their public service duties in preparation for taking charge of the Firm. Royal watchers have noted that the Queen has been all too happy to see Kate settle into her role, the Duchess of Cambridge having seamlessly entered the Royal Family as a young woman.

However, things were not always as clear cut.

When William and Kate’s relationship suffered a shaky mid-way point, the pair having gone on a break, reports suggest that many senior members of the Royal Family feared that a repeat of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles may ensue.

Royal author Kate Nicholls noted that the concerns were: “Had William also met the right woman at the wrong time?”

Yet, later, Kate’s placed in the Firm was secured after the Queen made a vital yet subtle gesture.

Veteran royal reporter Robert Jobson, in his 2006 book, ‘William’s Princess’, chronicled Kate’s rise and acceptance, entering into private meetings with the monarch — something almost unheard of.

He wrote: “In September 2005, I received a tantalising telephone call from a senior Buckingham Palace insider.

“The source seemed quite upbeat, the news was happy.

“When I pressed the informant, a story unfolded that made me begin to appreciate just how important Kate was, and went a long way towards hinting at just how important she may yet become.

“I was told that Kate had had a series of private meetings with the Queen.

“The two – joined by William – had had at least two intimate dinners in recent months, and Her Majesty had developed a ‘warm and relaxed relationship’ with her grandson’s girlfriend.

“One of the dinners was said to have taken place at Windsor Castle.

“This is the Queen’s favourite royal residence and one that she truly regards as home.

“This was significant in itself.”

The Palace source told the author: “Her Majesty takes a loving interest in her grandson and heir and she is delighted he is so happy with Kate.

“Kate has a wonderfully relaxed manner, and to be so relaxed in the company of the Queen is a good thing.

“It speaks volumes about how the Queen feels about her.”

Over the course of the following years, the Queen’s regard for Kate has only deepened.

Writing for Vanity Fair in 2019, Ms Nicholl explained how the Queen “admires” the Duchess.

She wrote: “Royal sources insist the Queen holds Kate in high regard and admires how she juggles her royal role with a busy family.”

A source told the author: “The Queen is a fan. Kate is unflappable.

“Her mantra is very like the Queen’s keep calm and carry on approach in life, and she has the added benefit of making the Royal Family seem almost normal and in touch.”

Ms Nicholl added: “Having awarded her granddaughter-in-law the Royal Family Order, the highest honour the monarch can bestow on a female member of the family at the end of last year, the Queen was reportedly thrilled with the Cambridges’ recent tour of Pakistan, which saw Kate give her first-ever TV interview and make headlines around the world with her well-considered wardrobe choices and her unusual decision to stop the royal convoy so the couple could meet a local family.”
