Queen’s regret: How Theresa May found a friend in the Queen as she said goodbye to No10
The Queen meets with the Prime Minister each week to discuss Government matters. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II has welcomed 14 Prime Ministers, equalling the record of King George III who reigned between 1760 and 1820. It is reported the Queen did not have a warm relationship with her first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, however, she has apparently looked forward to her weekly audiences with Theresa May.
She now may miss meeting with Mrs May each week, now instead holding an audience with Boris Johnson.
According to ITV’s Royal Editor Chris Ship: “While members of the Royal Family sit above the political debate, I’ve heard some of them speak with admiration for the level of hard work and many hours of negotiation Theresa May has invested in her role over the last three years.”
The Queen should already have travelled to Balmoral Castle for her annual summer break at but she delayed her plans to greet the new Prime Minister today.
Mr Johnson has since given his first speech outside number 10 Downing Street, pledging a “new deal, a better deal” for Brexit and to prove “the doubters” wrong.

It may take time for the Queen to grow accustomed to the new Prime Minister as one Royal Butler told the Daily Star that the 93-year-old had a particular fondness for Mrs May.
The butler, who has worked for the Queen for more than a decade, said: “The Queen is so good at dealing with people, doesn’t matter which prime minister, no matter who they are.
“But with Tony Blair, you could tell there wasn’t a bond, and same with Gordon Brown and even David Cameron – even though he is a Conservative.
“However with Theresa may – and a lot of people say this – you can really see that bond.

“The last time that happened was when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, and they had a big falling out that was well documented.
“That bond is there (between herself and May), they get on really well.”
Describing the things they both speak about, the butler said: “They talk about the countryside, church – as May is fairly churchgoing – and Balmoral Castle (where the Queen lives).
“They even talk about family, such as the Queen’s grandchildren.

“For the queen to speak about family on that scale… she would never do that with a Prime Minister.”
This afternoon the Queen accepted Mrs May’s resignation and requested that Boris Johnson form a new Government.
The official statement from Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen received in Audience The Right Honourable Boris Johnson MP this afternoon and requested him to form a new Administration.
“Mr Johnson accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
