The Royal Family line-up going forward will not be “half as exciting” without Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, commentators have warned. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have officially confirmed to the Queen that they will not be returning as working royals, and have subsequently given back their remaining patronages and honours. ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed the impact of the couple’s exit on the monarchy.

Mr Ship told listeners: “The ‘Magnificent Seven’ are the Queen’s new number of the Royal Family.

“In order, that’s Charles and Camilla, Kate and William, Anne and Edward and Sophie.

“That’s apparently the shape of the new Royal Family.

“Many people have said it doesn’t sound half as exciting without Harry and Meghan in it.”

He continued: “But anyway we are where we are, this is the new world.

“The Sussexes have exited, they’ve done it comprehensively.

“They’ve done it with an element of finality, I think we’d all agree.

“They aren’t planning to come back to the UK or the Royal Family anytime soon.”

The so-called ‘Magnificent Seven’ were assembled at Christmas last year for a carol performance.

Standing on the steps of Windsor Castle, the Queen welcomed the senior royals after not seeing them for months.

The family were photographed as they listened to a Salvation Army band playing festive tunes.

During that time, the Sussexes were still in their one-year transition period after stepping down as senior royals.

Now, with the confirmation that they are not returning, the terms of their exit deal have been altered.

A Buckingham Palace statement read: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much-loved members of the family.”
