Queen’s guilty pleasure: How the Queen loves to indulge in this sweet treat
The Queen is known for enforcing tradition above everything else, ensure the Royal Family behave in accordance with their positions. Queen Elizabeth II has healthy eating habits generally and reportedly prefers frugal meals and tv dinners in her sitting room. But apparently the rule-enforcing and following Queen Elizabeth II cannot help herself when she is around one sweet treat. So what is this irresistible indulgence the Queen simply cannot say no to?
According to the Queen’s former royal chef Darren McGrady, she has a real soft spot for chocolate.
Mr McGrady told Hello! Online: “She is absolutely a chocoholic.
“Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose, especially chocolate perfection pie.”
Throughout her life and 67-year reign, the Queen has visited 116 countries, making her the most travelled monarch in British history.
But despite her extensive travel experience, the Queen has yet to find an indulgence that satiates her sweet tooth more than chocolate.
Mr McGrady said: “She likes chocolate, but only dark chocolate, the darker the better.
“She’s not a big fan of milk or white chocolate.”
In fact, the Queen’s favourite sweet treat is said to be Bendicks Bittermints.
These small dark chocolate treats, reportedly the Queen’s “favourite for snacking”, are filled with mint and earned the Royal Warrant in 1962.
But according to this former chef, the Queen’s one decadence relates to chocolate, whereas in other areas, she is surprisingly modest.
Mr McGrady told Hello! Online: “But the Queen never was a foodie. She always ate to live rather than live to eat.
“Prince Philip was the foodie.
“He’d want to try any new dishes all the time and got excited about new ingredients whereas the Queen if we had a new recipe, she’d have to look at the whole recipe before saying, ‘Yes ok let’s try it’. But for the most part, she stuck to the same dishes week in week out.”
In a documentary, the eating habits of the Royal Family are revealed as former royal check Graham Newbould reveals how he used to cook for the Queen with military precision.
Mr Newbould revealed secrets about his time with Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
In the documentary, he said he often cooked baked jacket potatoes, a favourite of the late Princess.
He also recalled recreating their famous 1981 Wedding breakfast, which included quenelles of brille with lobster sauce, lamb stuffed chicken breast, and strawberries and cream.
Each year the Royal Family’s food bill comes in at around £1.6million which includes all food consumed at formal dinners, garden parties as well as their tea with breakfast, and every sweet treat the Queen can get her hands on.
But generally according to Mr McGrady, the Queen’s indulgence in sweet treats was a rarity.
The chef said: “She’s very disciplined like that.
“She could have anything she wanted, but it is that discipline that keeps her so well and so healthy.”
Her healthy eating style includes bringing home-grown vegetables, fish and pheasants from her various estates, including Balmoral and Windsor, to her table.
Mr McGrady said: “The Queen loves to eat food from the estate.”
He added that this had a resultant impact on Prince Charles, who preferred to do the same.
Mr McGrady even claimed the Prince of Wales was “organic before organic was even invented”.
