Queen’s dresser Angela Kelly’s nickname inspired by ‘temper’
The cruel nickname AK47 has been revealed as the name given to the late Queen’s dresser Angela Kelly inspired by her initials and “hair-trigger temper”. The 71-year-old Liverpool dock worker’s daughter rose to become one of the most trusted confidantes of Queen Elizabeth II after starting work for her in 2002.
Ms Kelly has been credited with creating the former monarch’s vibrant wardrobe and for famously wearing in her shoes because the two women were the same size.
She was honoured by Her Majesty who made her a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2012, a title bestowed only on those viewed as being the most loyal and indispensable to the Royal Family.
But for some in the Royal Household there was tension, most notably with Prince Harry writing in his tell-all memoir Spare that she was “obstructive” and “a troublemaker”.
It’s reported the Duke of Sussex took against Ms Kelly after claims of a falling out between the pair over the tiara Meghan would wear for their wedding in 2018.
Ms Kelly, who wrote two authorised books about her relationship with the Queen, was also given a grace-and-favour cottage in Windsor Home Park. During her service to the Queen she moved into a room on the same floor as the monarch in the Augusta Tower at Windsor Castle.
But at the weekend she wrote on her Instagram page she was getting ready to move to a new home.
Alongside a picture of her garden and mature trees in the distance, she wrote: “Getting ready to say goodbye. I am moving at last to my new home which I will be able to call My Home at last.”
Replying to someone wishing her well, Ms Kelly said she was moving north to be near her family and that she was looking forward to “New Adventures”. Ms Kelly also revealed in the post that her royal work phone had been “disconnected”.
Richard Kay, the Daily Mail Editor-at-Large, said that despite her steadfast service to the Queen, Ms Kelly’s standing amongst the wider Royal Family has since dwindled.
Writing about her weekend Instagram posts, he said: “On the face of it, such caustic comments suggest that the fiery Ms Kelly, whose hair-trigger temper was behind the nickname she received at Buckingham Palace — AK-47, a play on her initials and the Soviet-built assault rifle — has been shabbily treated after all her years of steadfast loyalty. Terminating her telephone does, on the surface at least, seem churlish.”
According to the Daily Mail the new home Ms Kelly is moving to in Yorkshire has been provided by King Charles, honouring his late mother’s wish her beloved dresser should have accommodation provided for her for life.
