The Queen’s diary will come under intense scrutiny following her night in hospital as the monarch was forced to cancel a visit to Northern Ireland on medical advice. Over the following days, reports leaked that the Queen spent the night in the hospital where she underwent “preliminary investigations” before returning to Windsor on Thursday. Debates are now under way over the health of the Queen and her relentless drive to keep working with one royal editor believing her future diary will now be closely followed but is unlikely to be reduced under direct orders from the Queen.

Speaking on Sky News, Sunday Times royal editor Roya Nikkhah was asked how much of the Queen’s diary is dictated by her.

She responded: “A lot is the last question.

“The Queen’s diary tends to be planned around six months in advance and there is no way that anyone, when they’re 95 or 19, can tell how they’re going to feel in six months time.

“But there’s been a lot of coverage about courtiers trying to cram too much into her diary.

“It is up to the Queen liaising with her courtiers and her diary secretary as to what she feels she’s able to do.

“And there was definitely a feeling, as we emerged from the lockdown from the spring into the summer, that the Queen had been isolating at Windsor Castle for the best part of a year and a half.

“She had lost the Duke of Edinburgh and she had been on her own and it felt it was coming from her.

“She wants to go out there, back and away from zoom and start meeting people and doing physical engagements again. That desire has come from her.

“I’m sure we’re going to see very careful scrutiny of her diary going forwards.”

Ms Nikkhah concluded and said we would not see any drastic reduction in events following the health concerns as the Queen “will want to do as much as she can”.

Buckingham Palace revealed Her Majesty was in “good spirits” following “preliminary investigations” during her hospital visit.
