Queen’s demand for agreeing 2012 Olympics James Bond stunt – ‘Almost fell off his chair’

The Queen had one critical request when she agreed to take part in a sketch for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Her Majesty teamed up with Daniel Craig, who played James Bond, and director Danny Boyle, for a sketch clip which aired during the opening ceremony. In the clip, the Queen is greeted by James Bond, before stunt actors later show the pair helicoptered across London and parachuted into the Olympics venue.

Angela Kelly, the Queen’s dresser and close confidant, has shared how the iconic moment was set up, during her new book, ‘The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe’.

During her account, Ms Kelly explains how the Queen had one request when agreeing to take part in the sketch – to have a speaking role.

Mr Kelly, in an extract obtained by Hello! magazine, wrote: “Having listened to Danny’s plan, I asked him and Edward to give me five minutes so that I could ask the Queen.

“I remember the look of shock on Danny’s face that I would be asking Her Majesty straight away, but there’s no point in waiting around with these things: if she said no, that would be the end of it.”

Without hesitation, Her Majesty replied: ‘Of course I must say something. After all, he is coming to rescue me’

Although the Queen “was very amused by the idea and agreed immediately,” she demanded her role was more than just an appearance.

Ms Kelly recalled: “I asked then if she would like a speaking part.

“Without hesitation, Her Majesty replied: ‘Of course I must say something. After all, he is coming to rescue me.’”

She added: “I asked whether she would like to say: ‘Good evening, James,’ or: ‘Good evening, Mr Bond,’ and she chose the latter, knowing the Bond films.

“Within minutes, I was back in Edward’s office delivering the good news to Danny.

“I think he almost fell off his chair when I said that the Queen’s only stipulation was that she could deliver that iconic line.”

In the clip, which aired during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, James Bond arrived at Buckingham Palace to collect the Queen.

In a parody of the British spy films, the Queen greeted the agent, by saying: “Good evening, Mr Bond”.

The Queen then exited the room as she was followed by James Bond.

After Craig’s character picks up the Queen from Buckingham Palace, stunt actors playing them helicoptered across London and parachuted into the Olympic venue.

To massive applause, Her Majesty then appeared on the steps of the VIP steps for her grand entrance in the stadium.

During her book, Ms Kelly also revealed the Queen has a small number of rooms in her Buckingham Palace apartment.

The apartment includes just a bedroom, private sitting room, dressing room and a bathroom.

Her audiences, with everyone from prime ministers to ambassadors, are held in the room of the same name while guests are sometimes asked to wait in the Empire room.

But, the only people allowed into the Queen’s private sanctum are members of the Royal Family.
