Queen’s attempts to support Meghan Markle and Harry ‘were never good enough’ – expert

Meghan and Harry have stepped down as senior royals after having voiced their desire to become financially independent and live abroad. Their exit as full-time working members of the Royal Family has created havoc, fuelled both by statements issued by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as well as claims freshly published in the unauthorised biography Finding Freedom, where the unhappiness of Meghan and Harry has been laid bare.

In the wake of accusations made by sources close to the Sussexes in the book, the Daily Express’ royal correspondent Richard Palmer stated many members of the Royal Family did actually try to help Meghan feel welcomed.

Providing the Queen’s invitation to spend Christmas with her three years ago as an example, Mr Palmer wrote on Twitter: “I think they all tried, including the Queen.

“Think back to the pre-wedding invitation to Sandringham.

“Nothing was ever good enough for Harry and Meghan though.”

Many royal fans agreed with the expert, with Twitter user Fay writing: “I think they all tried. She was certainly welcomed.

“The Queen broke protocol with inviting her to various functions.”

Royal fan Natasha added: “Adults in the room know this.

“Harry did not manage her expectations. It’s easy to blame everybody else.”

Twitter user with the nickname Salty NotSweet added: “Honestly I think even if the keys to the palace were turned over and Her Majesty gave up the crown to them, it would STILL not be enough.”

Similarly, Memb54 wrote: “And this house won’t be enough either.

“She’ll never attain the happiness she’s looking for. She could have done so much more.”

In December 2017, the Queen broke with royal tradition and invited Meghan, then a royal fiancée, to spend Christmas at Sandringham and attend service on Christmas Day alongside the rest of the Royal Family.

This was the first time an unmarried partner of a prince or princess was allowed to join the royals on Christmas Day.

Two years later, the Queen offered once again this honour to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice’s then-fiancé.

The Queen also showed her support to Meghan by inviting her on a joint engagement just a few weeks after the Sussexes’ royal wedding.

And after Megxit, in January this year, the monarch also said to have been left impressed by “how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family”.

Meghan publicly lamented twice she had not received the support she was hoping for by the Institution.

First, in October last year, she told ITV broadcaster Tom Bradby not many people had asked her if she was okay following difficult months of what she claimed to be negative press coverage as a new mother.

Earlier this year, she issued a statement to the High Court in London through her legal team as part of her ongoing case against the Mail on Sunday’s publisher, Associated Newspapers.

Asked by the defendant’s lawyers why Meghan was feeling vulnerable at the time of the publication of extracts of the letter she sent to her father, her legal team said: “The Claimant had become the subject of a large number of false and damaging articles by the UK tabloid media, specifically by the Defendant, which caused tremendous emotional distress and damage to her mental health.

“As her friends had never seen her in this state before, they were rightly concerned for her welfare, specifically as she was pregnant, unprotected by the Institution, and prohibited from defending herself.”

Sources who spoke to Finding Freedom’s author Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed Meghan and Harry felt the Duchess had been disrespected.

One source said she had been privately addressed by a member of the Royal Family as “Harry’s showgirl” while an aide was heard saying “she comes with a lot of baggage”.

Moreover, Prince Harry was furious after Prince William told her to take time to reflect on his blossoming romance with the former actress before moving any further and propose.
