Royal commentator Richard Kay said the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had talked about how they would get on if the other passed away. The pair agreed that after a period of mourning they would “enjoy what remained of their life”, according to Mr Kay.
Writing in the Daily Mail, the royal expert said: “The two had often discussed how each would cope without the other at their side, and it boiled down to this: whoever was left should mourn, but not for too long, then enjoy what remained of their life.”
Mr Kay’s comments come as the Queen, 95, has delighted royal fans with a string of beaming appearances.
The royals observed a two-week period of mourning following the Duke of Edinburgh’s death in April.
Since then, the monarch has stepped out for a number of engagements and events.
The Queen led members of the Royal Family at the G7 summit in Cornwall last month.
She amused world leaders with a cheeky quip as they posed for a photo, asking: “Are you supposed to be looking as if you’re enjoying yourself?'”
And the head of state prompted further mirth when she insisted on cutting a cake with a ceremonial sword despite a knife being available, saying it was “more unusual”.
Also in June, the Queen – who is known for her love of horses – returned to Royal Ascot for the first time since 2019.
And she attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show last week.
The show takes place across five days each year and involves international competitions in three equestrian disciplines.
A number of pictures show the Queen, who has spent much of the pandemic at Windsor Castle, beaming.

On Sunday, the monarch wore a green coat, flowery headscarf and sunglasses for the outing.
She was joined by the Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor, who took part in the day’s activities.
The monarch is showing no sign of slowing down following her busy few weeks.
She stepped out today to visit the set of ITV soap Coronation Street in Manchester.
The Queen met Corrie actors including Charlotte Jordan, who plays Daisy Midgeley, the street “troublemaker” she was told.
The monarch replied: “I suppose life is a trouble.”
