Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip today celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary. The pair marked the monumental occasion by releasing a photograph showing them opening a card from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children. Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two, are known to be extremely close to their grandparents.

The handmade card was bright with colour, and had the number 73 printed on the front which pops out slightly.

Many stories of the Queen’s relationship with the three royal children have surfaced in recent years.

One came after the Queen awarded 10-year-old Emily Clay a Bible – an annual tradition where Her Majesty presents a Bible to a pupil from one of the local primary schools on her Norfolk estate who does best in a religious studies project.

It was during this meeting that the Queen offered an adorable anecdote about Charlotte and George.

She asked Emily if she “looked after” her little sister, and her mother replied that it was more the other way around, to which the Queen said: “It’s like that with Charlotte and George.”

Her comments mirrored that of Kate’s a year earlier.

She said in March 2017 that Charlotte was actually the one in charge over the family.

Describing the encounter, Emily’s mother, Ellen, said: “She asked if Emily looked after Hadleigh and I said it was more the other way round. She said it was like that with Princess Charlotte and Prince George.”

Her father, who also received a Bible from the Queen when he was 10, said: “The Queen was implying that Charlotte keeps an eye out for George rather than the other way around.

Meanwhile, in the heart-warming image, the monarch is elegant in a pale blue double wool crepe dress by Stewart Parvin and a chrysanthemum brooch made from sapphires and diamonds set in platinum

Next to her, Philip wears a smart blazer, shirt, tie and trousers.

In front of the couple sits a pile of other anniversary cards.

The Queen, now 94 years old, was just 21 when she married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey on November 20 1947; he was 26.

Philip retired from public duties in 2016 after decades of supporting the Queen, as well as attending events for his own charities and organisations.

The pair have been isolating at Windsor Castle, with anniversary celebrations expected to be low key as a result of the pandemic.

Theirs is the longest-lasting relationship of any British sovereign in history.

Throughout the years, they have celebrated several key milestones: silver, golden and diamond jubilees of the Queen’s reign.

They have also endured the intense scrutiny and lack of privacy that comes with royal life, including the breakdown of three of their children’s marriages, the controversy surrounding the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and, more recently, the fallout with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the Royal Family.
