Three of these throwback snaps depict the loved-up couples in different moments of their lives. The fourth, black-and-white, picture shows Prince Philip in his Navy uniform.  The photographs were accompanied by a brief message, reading: “Wishing The Duke of Edinburgh a very happy birthday!”

The tweet also revealed how the couple are going to celebrate the special day.

It added: “His Royal Highness turns 99 today and will spend the day with The Queen at Windsor.”

The Queen and Prince Philip arrived at Windsor Castle on March 19, when they started their self-isolation in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

On the day, the monarch was seen being driven away from Buckingham Palace with one of her dogs on her lap.

The Duke was not spotted arriving via helicopter, on which he was transported to Berkshire from the five-bedroom cottage he has been living in since last September.

The couple spent the autumn and winter months apart as the Duke remained in Sandringham while the Queen was at work either in London or Windsor.

Despite the distance, the couple remained in touch with daily phone calls, sources claimed at the time.

The decision to spend the months of lockdown in Windsor has allowed Prince Philip and the Queen to celebrate two big milestones together – not just the Duke’s birthday but also the monarch’s in April.

Prince Philip is also going to be at Windsor on Saturday, when the monarch will celebrate her official birthday with a revisited version of the annual Trooping the Colour parade.

While the event can’t take place in its traditional form because of the social-distancing rules in place, the Queen will be able to assist to a mini-version of it featuring the Welsh Guards at Windsor.

It isn’t known whether Prince Philip will step out of the castle to see the televised event alongside the monarch.

Prince Philip retired from public office in August 2017, after having carried out more than 22,000 solo events.

After his retirement, the Duke appeared in public on important occasions such as the weddings of the Sussexes and Princess Beatrice.

He was also pictured meeting for the first time Meghan and Harry’s son, Archie, in May last year.

However, after the summer of 2017, he stopped attending Trooping the Colour parades or Christmas Day services.

Prior to his birthday, the Duke of Edinburgh was last seen in public in January, when his daughter Princess Anne was driving him around the Sandringham estate.

Yesterday evening, Buckingham Palace released a new picture of the Duke standing alongside the Queen on the grounds of their Berkshire residence.

The caption to the picture read: “This new photograph of The Duke of Edinburgh and The Queen was taken last week in the quadrangle at Windsor Castle to mark His Royal Highness’s 99th birthday tomorrow.”
