Royal historian Anna Whitelock said the monarch, 95, lives by the motto that “you need to be seen to be believed”. But she said how visible Her Majesty is between now and her Platinum Jubilee next year will depend on her health.

Celebrations will take place throughout the year as the Queen celebrates 70 years as monarch but will be focused on a four-day bank holiday in June.

Ms Whitelock told Express.co.uk: “I think she’s going very much want to be visible but I think it’s going very much depend on her health.

“There’s obviously been medical guidance which suggested that she’s to take it easy.

“She’s clearly helped by the advent of Zoom audiences and the ability to give speeches at a distance.

“So that actually has come at the right time for her.

“But she very much has always lived by the adage ‘you need to be seen to be believed’.

“She wants to be out there, she wants to be doing her thing.

“So I think it’s going to very much though depend on doctor’s advice and her health.”

Concern for the health of the Queen has been heightened in recent months after she pulled out of a number of major engagements.

The monarch spent a night in hospital in King Edward VII’s Hospital on October 20 for preliminary tests and was ordered to rest by royal doctors.

Since her hospital stay, she has been carrying out light duties at Windsor Castle.

Ms Whitelock said heir to the throne Prince Charles and Prince William, who is second in line, will increasingly be the “visible face of the monarch”.

She said of the Queen: “She’s certainly not actively deciding to step back, obviously she is being guided by her doctors.

“And I think we’re just sort of seeing the reality of a 95-year-old being slightly limited by their age.

“We’re going to therefore see a continued trend of Charles and William being the visible face of the monarchy.

“And in that sense, I think, there is a transition and obviously the finale of that transition will be when the Queen dies.

“But I think it’s important to stress that she does remain head of state.

“The support and popularity in many places for the monarchy is maintained very much because of the Queen.

“And when she dies, there will be a period of uncertainty I think about how far in the longer-term people continue to support the monarchy.

“This is just a kind of another step in a period of transition which has long been coming but has accelerated a little bit over the last few months because of her ill health.”
