Queen warned Meghan Markle and Harry in Canada could harm delicate balance of monarchy
The Globe and Mail, a popular Canadian newspaper which had more than two million readers a week in 2015, issued a blistering warning to Meghan, Harry and the Royal Family. In an editorial, the paper reminded Queen Elizabeth II that while the “concept” of the Crown is central to Canada, its Royal Family members aren’t.
The article said: “Our royals don’t live here. They reign from a distance.
“A royal living in this country does not accord with the long-standing nature of the relationship between Canada and Britain, and Canada and the Crown.
“This country’s unique monarchy, and its delicate yet essential place in our constitutional system, means that a royal resident is not something that Canada can allow.”
The article also urged the Canadian Government to deny residence to Meghan and Harry.
The Globe and Mail argued that, while Canada is a member of the Commonwealth, it is so as “an equal independent nation” to the UK.
The editorial continued: “The concept of the Crown is at the centre of the Canadian system of Government.
“But though Canada borrowed from Britain, it isn’t Britain and never was.
“And this country long ago took steps to make that unmistakably clear.
“Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal.
“In response to the sudden announcement of a vague and evolving plan for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to move to Canada while remaining part of the Royal Family, the Trudeau government’s response should be simple and succinct: No.”
This editorial clearly states that Meghan and Harry should not be allowed to call Canada home.
But the Royal Family has yet to reveal where the couple will live in the long-term after negotiations between the Crown, the Governments of the countries involved and the Sussexes are over.
Following Monday’s summit at Sandringham House between Prince Harry, Prince William, Prince Charles and the Queen, the monarch allowed Meghan and Harry to live between Canada and the UK during the “period of transition” needed by the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family to complete their change of status.
She said: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.
“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.
“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.
“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.
“It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.
“These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
While Prince Harry is remaining in the UK for the time being, with a series of engagements to carry out in the next few days, Meghan has flown back to Canada last week, to rejoin her son Archie Harrison.
On Tuesday, the Duchess was spotted boarding a seaplane.
It was later revealed she was heading to visit a women’s shelter, Charity Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.
