Queen urges surprise guest to ‘break the rules’ during royal visit in protocol blunder
According to Michelle’s book, ‘Becoming’ Her Majesty told her the rules were “rubbish”. Michelle and her husband, former US President Barack Obama, landed by helicopter. The couple were then picked up by the Queen and her husband Prince Philip in their Range Rover.
Michelle was originally told to sit in the front seat with Philip.
However, the Queen had other ideas.
The former First Lady wrote: “After we’d touched down in a field on the palace grounds and said our hellos, however, the Queen abruptly threw a wrench into everything by gesturing for me to join her in the backseat of the Range Rover.
“I froze, trying to remember if anyone had prepped me for this scenario, whether it was more polite to go along with it or to insist that Barack take his proper seat by her side.”
The Queen immediately sensed Michelle’s confusion and offered her some clarity on the situation.
Rather than telling Michelle to follow the rules, the Queen told her to break royal protocol.
Her Majesty said to Michelle: “Did they give you some rule about this?
“That’s rubbish.
“Sit wherever you want.”
Michelle also broke royal protocol the first time she met the Queen and is still often mocked by royal fans.
Rather than curtseying for the Queen, she went ahead and hugged her.
The Queen met with Michelle and her husband Barack in 2009, yet the former First Lady is still receiving backlash for her faux pas.

ichelle mentioned the embarrassing blunder during her book tour in April.
She said: “Yikes! Sorry guys!”
Michelle said she now holds her hands together to stop herself from making the same “human” mistake.
She added: “I don’t know that I could have done anything differently because it was a natural human reaction.”
Writing in her book, Michelle also discussed the blunder.
She said: “I then did what’s instinctive to me anytime I feel connected to a new person, which is to express my feelings outwardly.
“I laid a hand affectionately across her shoulder.
“I daresay the Queen was okay with it, too, because when I touched her, she only pulled closer, resting a gloved hand lightly on the small of my back.”
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said at the time the moment was perfectly fine with her Majesty and not a breach of royal protocol.
