On Sunday Ms Winfrey’s two-hour interview was broadcast on CBS in the United States. During an emotional appearance Meghan admitted she had developed suicidal thoughts since joining the royals and said before Archie was born another family member raised “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin would be”.

In response Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying they took the issues raised “very seriously” and they will be “addressed by the family privately”.

Writing for TheArticle Dr Michael Pinto-Duschinsky claimed this statement “fell short” and urged the Royal Family to reinstate the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes official roles.

The constitutional expert said: “Her Majesty and Prince Charles may respectfully be advised to reconsider some of the decisions that have been taken against Harry and Meghan on the basis of misinterpretations of royal rules, rules which are in any case not immutable.

“There are precedents for members of royal families, including ours, to earn a living while also carrying out some royal duties and there is no shortage of money-making schemes to bolster royal finances.”

Dr Pinto-Duschinsky suggested a four-stage programme to reintegrate the Sussexes into royal life.

He argued: “The Queen should consider giving Archie and, after her hopefully safe birth, his sister the same princely titles as those bestowed as a matter of discretion on Prince William’s younger children.

“Prince Harry should be permitted the formal role he seeks in paying tribute to his fellow soldiers on Armistice Day.

“It is not too late to give both Meghan and Harry some royal roles and patronages, albeit part-time and without financial benefit.

“Clearly they both have exceptional abilities and motives to give public service.”

The writer added Meghan and Harry should be allowed to give “their side of the story” on bullying accusations during the upcoming Buckingham Palace inquiry.

He also suggested the inquiry should extend beyond the Sussexes’ and cover the treatment of staff in all royal households.

Shortly before the Oprah interview was broadcast The Times published a piece alleging “two senior members of staff claimed that they were bullied by the Duchess”.

In response the Sussexes claimed they were victims of “a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation”.

In February Harry and Meghan were stripped of their remaining royal patronages by the Queen after confirming they didn’t plan to return to frontline royal duty.

The Duke, who served ten years in the army including time in Afghanistan, also lost his honorary military positions.

Currently the Sussexes live in California having stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family in March 2020.

Last summer the couple moved into a £11.2 million mansion in Santa Barbara, north of Los Angeles.

The luxury property came complete with a swimming pool, tennis court and children’s cottage.

In September 2020 it was announced Harry and Meghan had signed a major deal with streaming service Netflix.

The royals will produce films, documentaries and children’s shows for the streaming giant.

Harry and Meghan have also launched a podcast on Spotify featuring celebrity friends and social activists.

The first episode, a festive special, was released last December.
