The Queen, 94, will be travelling more than 500 miles from Windsor Castle to Balmoral Castle in Scottish Highlands to spend her summer there as she traditionally does every year. The Monarch has been self-isolating at Windsor Castle with Prince Philip, 99, and has not been to any public engagements since the coronavirus outbreak. It is unclear if she will be travelling alone or if the Duke of Edinburgh will join her.

Speaking on ITV’s Royal rota, producer Lizzie Robinson said: “There’s a lot about the Queen and when she will go to Balmoral.”

Royal editor Chris Ship added: “Our understanding is she will go to Balmoral where she spends every summer in the Scottish Highlands.

“When she goes is a matter of much debate.”

Ms Robinson added: “I think even though the plan is for her to go, they will review it and keep it under constant review given the current situation.”

Mr Ship noted: “Having been to Balmoral and I thoroughly recommend going if you can, it’s a good place to be isolated.

“There’s no risk of anyone bumping into her.”

However, there are no plans for when the Queen will return from Balmoral.

One insider has suggested the Queen won’t return to London as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle announced they will be making redundancies.

The source told the Daily Telegraph: “The word is Buckingham Palace is not being opened up any time soon, which has huge implications for staff.

“The Queen is planning to spend the summer in Balmoral as usual, but after that it’s thought she will probably return to Windsor Castle.

“What that means for staff in London is anyone’s guess.

“A lot of people fear they’ll lose their jobs.”

The Queen’s travel plans come as Westminster Abbey is to reopen to visitors on Saturday after its longest closure since the Queen’s coronation nearly 70 years ago.

The royal church in central London has been shut for four months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Steeped in more than a thousand years of history, the gothic Abbey has been at the forefront of major royal ceremonies for generation after generation.

The Queen as Princess Elizabeth wed the Duke of Edinburgh in the historic surrounds, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married there in 2011.
