Several photos were yesterday posted onto the Royal Family’s Instagram story – so it’s likely that they won’t be available to look at for long.

The photos – showing rooms including the White Drawing Room, Throne Room, Picture Gallery and more – contain captions providing facts and history.

Buckingham Palace’s State Rooms are usually open to visitors for around 10 weeks each summer, as well as some weeks during the winter and spring, the Daily Mail reports.

However, last month the Royal Collection Trust (RCT) said that the State Rooms will not be open to the public this summer, due to “operational challenges of social distancing.”

The virtual insight into some of the Palace’s rooms might not be the same as being there, but it might be the next best thing.

The Instagram photos reveal some information about each of the rooms shown. The first few slides read: “Every summer, Buckingham Palace welcomes thousands of visitors to the State Rooms and Garden. This year, the summer opening will not take place.

But with the help of Royal Collection Trust, you can explore the palace from home.”

The White Drawing Room, for example, is used as a reception room for the Queen and other royals to gather in before occasions.

And the Throne room – designed by John Nash, along with the State Rooms – contains opulent thrones tailored to the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

There’s also the Picture Gallery, which was originally designed to display artwork of George VI and today holds works from a number of artists, mainly from the 17th century, the Royal Family’s Instagram said.

If the Instagram story has since been taken down, then there is no need to worry – a virtual tour of the rooms is also available online.

This ‘virtual tour’ can be accessed on the ‘Discover’ section of the RCT’s website.

There, one can view 360-degree images of Royal rooms such as the Throne Room and the Grand Staircase.

The images also contain icons which can be clicked and reveal bits of information about certain items around the room.

The ‘Discover’ section also contains plenty of content on objects in the Royal Collection including postcards and letters that the Collection holds.

There’s plenty more, too. Under the ‘People and Palaces’ section, for instance, one can watch a video about the embroidery of Mary, Queen of Scots, or read through a history of herbs.

In addition to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace being shut, the RCT said last month that Frogmore House and Clarence House will not reopen in August 2020.

The RCT said it is unable to say when other Palaces will reopen, but said that it “will continue to monitor Government advice”.

The suspension of public visits to Buckingham Palace is not the only interruption the Covid-19 pandemic has had for the Royal Family.

The Duke of Edinburgh celebrated his 99th birthday earlier this month, but due to the lockdown measures, gun salutes, which usually accompany the occasion, did not go ahead.

This year, Prince Philip’s birthday was more low-key. He and the Queen, 94 are currently residing in Windsor Castle.
