The monarch shocked royal fans when she decided to leave photos of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and baby Archie out of a series of family photos on display in her Christmas Day speech. And now it has emerged the missing photo was “yet another sign Harry and Meghan needed to consider their own path”, according to sensational claims in new autobiography ‘Finding Freedom’.

Finding Freedom, serialised by the Times and the Sunday Times, claims the Duchess of Sussex “tearfully” told a friend before the couple made the decision to exit the Royal Family:

“I gave up my entire life for this family.

“I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It’s very sad.”

It comes as the new book on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, co-authored by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durandby, brought fresh allegations of a downturn in relations between members of the royal family.

Earlier this year, Harry and Meghan quit as senior working royals and moved to Los Angeles.

The move, dubbed Megxit, took effect on March 31, when the Duke and Duchess stopped using their HRH titles and bowed out from the royal family.

The Queen’s grandson and the American former actress wanted to step down as senior royals while maintaining a dual role, supporting the monarch and earning their own money.

But their plan was dismissed as unworkable, and would have led to accusations they were cashing in on their royal status.

The book also told how a website designed to clarify Harry and Meghan’s future was “deeply upsetting” to members of the royal family and “hurt the Queen”.

Finding Freedom said the couple were forced to take action after a story broke that they were going to stay in Canada permanently.

The book’s authors wrote that a royal source denied leaking the story, instead blaming the couple “because they were frustrated at the palace in the talks that were going on… They wanted to force the decision, to break it open.”

But the couple deny this claim, according to The Times.

On January 8, Harry and Meghan used their Instagram page to share the news of their future plans and launched the website sussexroyal.com.

The book’s authors write: “Aides and family members knew the couple wanted to step back, but the website, which laid out the details of their half-in-half-out model as if it were a done deal, put the Queen in a difficult position.”

The autobiography also told how the Sussexes considered the extreme measure of breaking royal protocol to contact the Queen as tensions grew in the royal family.

An extract from the book claimed Harry spoke to the Prince of Wales and the Queen about the need to change things before he left for Canada for six weeks at the end of last year.

The authors write: “He felt at once used for their popularity, hounded by the press because of the public’s fascination with this new breed of royal couple, and disparaged back within the institution’s walls.”

While in Canada, the couple decided to step back as senior royals.
Harry attempted to set a meeting with his grandmother at the start of January, but was told she was unavailable until the end of month.
