The 95-year-old monarch’s last 11 months have been examined for a new Channel 5 documentary. ‘2021: The Queen’s Terrible Year’ looks back at what has been one of the most turbulent years for Her Majesty. As the Queen prepares to celebrate 70 years of her glorious reign in 2022 at her Platinum Jubilee, she will likely not want to be reminded of some of the major events of this year.

Buckingham Palace has been stung by bombshell after bombshell in 2021, as several controversies have continued to haunt the House of Windsor.

Sexual abuse allegations against Prince Andrew – which he “unequivocally denies” – have been aired in court this year, with a new hearing now set for January.

Meanwhile, the drawn-out departure of Meghan and Harry as senior royals has also rumbled on in 2021.

Amid the royals’ recent controversies, the Queen has also been left heartbroken by the death of her beloved husband, Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April after being hospitalised weeks earlier as a “precautionary measure”.

While the Duke was bedbound, the Queen discussed the Meghan and Harry situation with him “on the phone”, The Sun’s royal photographer, Arthur Edwards, told the Channel 5 documentary.

He said: “She must have been concerned, but she probably spoke to him every day on the phone.

“And she probably discussed the Harry and Meghan situation on the phone with Philip.

“I think if he had any patience left, he would have probably calmed the Queen down a wee bit.”

Meghan and Harry dramatically stepped down from their royal duties at the end of March last year.

They have subsequently settled in the star-studded area of Montecito, California, with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

In March of this year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave an explosive sit-down interview to their friend Oprah Winfrey.

The couple made a string of shocking claims during their two-hour conversation with the US chat show host, which was broadcast on CBS and ITV.

Among their most damning allegations, from the Royal Family’s perspective, was the claim that one senior member of the Firm, who was not identified, raised “concerns” about what colour Archie’s skin might be when he was born.

In the aftermath of the Oprah interview, Prince Philip was said to have thought the Sussexes’ chat was “madness”, according to Gyles Brandreth, Philip’s biographer.

The former MP, who has known the Duke for 40 years, spoke to the Daily Mail.

He said: “I know from someone close to him that he thought Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey was ‘madness’ and ‘no good would come of it’.”

Despite Philip’s apparent opposition to the Oprah chat, Mr Brandreth said the Duke was understanding of Harry’s decision to ditch his royal duties, and was quoted as saying: “It’s his life”.

The Channel 5 documentary recalled how Prince Charles visited Philip in hospital, and that weeks before his passing, was said to have been distressed by his father’s condition.

Mr Edwards said: “Charles left pretty upset. So, I figured that that conversation had been: ‘It’s not far off for me’.

“He’s talking to Charles and probably saying, like most parents would say, ‘take care of your mother, keep an eye on your mother.

“‘Make sure everything’s fine’. It’s the sort of thing you would say.”

‘2021: The Queen’s Terrible Year’ is available to stream on My5.
