Meghan and Prince Harry’s two-hour-long interview with Oprah has left the Royal Family and Buckingham Palace reeling, according to royal commentator Roya Nikkhah. More than two weeks after the Sussexes’ first sit-down since Megxit aired in the UK, senior royals are trying to repair the damage done by the blistering claims coming from across the pond.
Appearing on The Times’ podcast Stories of our times, The Sunday Times royal correspondent Ms Nikkhah said: “We have seen since Harry and Meghan did that Oprah interview a couple of weeks ago just a bombshell hit the monarchy and explode and shatter things in the most extraordinary way.
“The Royal Family are just fire fighting at the moment to try and cope with the fallout from that and try and think about just how some of the damage can be repaired and they can move forward.
“But it is really quite an extraordinary development that no one really quite foresaw.”
The Royal Family, she added, are definitely suffering from the damage inferred by the accusations coming from Meghan and Harry.
She said: “They are feeling it, no doubt about it.
“This is being talked around across the world – and not in positive terms.
“It has done an enormous amount of damage to the family, the individuals, the monarchy and the institution as a whole.”
Meghan and Prince Harry discussed their relationships with senior royals and the palace as well as the reasons why they left Britain and the Firm during their chat with Oprah.
Prince Harry candidly spoke about the “hurt that’s happened” between him and Prince Charles.
He said: “There’s a lot to work through there, you know? I feel really let down, because he’s been through something similar.
“He knows what pain feels like, and this is… and Archie’s his grandson.
“But, at the same time, you know, I… of course I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened.
“And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”
Prince Harry also spoke about the relationship of “space” between him and his brother William.
Meghan told Oprah Kate is a “good person” and set the record straight on claims she had made the Duchess of Cambridge crying in the run-up to her wedding.
The Duchess of Sussex said the reverse had actually happened, but Kate had owned up to it and apologised.
Among the most damaging claims for the Royal Family, Meghan said she was feeling suicidal during her first pregnancy but was refused help from the palace.
Moreover, she spoke about “concerns” and conversations going on while she was expecting Archie over “how dark” the colour of his skin may be.
Following the interview, Oprah said Prince Harry had stressed to her off-camera that neither Prince Philip or the Queen had made remarks over Archie’s skin colour.
The claim of racism at the palace brought Prince William to take the rare decision to respond to a reporter’s question during a royal engagement.
Recalling Prince William saying to the cameras the Royal Family is “very much not a racist family” while visiting a London school, Ms Nikkhah said: “It was quite a moment.
“The point where you have a future king having to come out and defend his family against remarks that other members of his own family has said in terms of race, which is just the most emotive thing you can imagine, was just an extraordinary moment.
“But I know William felt he could not leave that question hung in the air unaddressed and felt he had to address it.
“But it was so extraordinary and different. He felt very strongly he had to tackle that head on.”
The Queen also responded to the claims of racism, saying in a statement that the issues raised by the Sussexes “particularly that of race, are concerning”.
She added: “While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
Oprah With Meghan and Harry was on ITV at 9pm on Monday March 8. You can watch the full interview on the ITV Hub.
