The Queen has spent longer on the British throne than any other monarch in national history. She took over the throne immediately following her father’s death in 1952, and has become one of the country’s most beloved figures. People can celebrate her en masse during her jubilee, one of the most highly anticipated royal events.

What does a platinum jubilee mean?

According to the Royal Family’s official website, the concept of the jubilee has existed since biblical times, but now shares a close association with the Royal Family.

Royals celebrate the life and reign of a monarch, marking significant periods in their rule.

They traditionally take place every 25 years, but the Queen’s situation is unique.

She has had three jubilees: her first silver in 1977, a second gold in 2002 and diamond in 2012.

They marked milestones of 25, 50 and 60 years on the throne respectively.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee takes place in 2022 and will commemorate 70 years on the throne.

As the longest-reigning monarch in the UK, she will be the first to receive one.

Is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee a bank holiday?

The Government has confirmed people will enjoy a bank holiday on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Ministers said they will mark the occasion on June 2, 2022, with a “blockbuster” celebration.

They will recognise the monarch’s achievements over 70 years alongside the royal household.

Oliver Dowden, minister of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said people will enjoy a four-day weekend from June 2 to 5.

He said: “Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee will be a truly historic moment – and one that deserves a celebration to remember.

“We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

“It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”

While the jubilee is an opportunity for the public to celebrate the Queen, it is also a chance for her to thank UK residents.

A palace spokesman revealed she wanted to use the occasion to express her thanks for support during her time on the throne.

The spokesman said: “The platinum jubilee offers an opportunity for the Queen to express her thanks for the support and loyalty Her Majesty has received throughout her reign.

“The Queen hopes that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to join the celebrations.”
