Queen makes secret visit to British spy HQ to praise ‘tireless work’ keeping UK safe

The Queen issued a heartfelt statement after she met staff members at the MI5. The monarch, who carried out an unannounced visit to the headquarters of the UK’s domestic counter-intelligence and security agency at Thames House today, praised the organisation’s ability for its commitment to its own motto.

The Queen’s statement read: “I would like to take my visit here today as an opportunity to thank you all for the tireless work you do to keep our country safe.

“I am always struck by the remarkable resolve with which you carry out your vital role.

“There will no doubt continue to be significant threats and challenges ahead.

“But on each of my visits to MI5, I have been impressed by the way that you have adapted to the changing threats to our nation.

“Whether responding to the threats from the Nazis or the Cold War, domestic terrorism or the cyber sphere, you have always demonstrated the utmost commitment to your motto: ‘Regnum Defende’.

“Because of the nature of your work, it is without public recognition, so it is on behalf of the country that I say to you all, thank you.”

The MI5 was founded in 1909 and is part of the country’s intelligence machinery alongside the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and Defence Intelligence (DI).

Its motto means “to defend the reign” in Latin.

The monarch, who wore a burgundy ensemble to carry out this important engagement, was spotted leaving the MI5’s headquarters with the organisation’s Director General Andrew Parker.

Just minutes after the Queen’s statement was shared on Twitter by the Royal Family’s official account, royal fans showered the monarch with compliments for her own commitment to the Crown.

One royal fan said: “Thank you to Her Majesty The Queen for almost 70 years of impeccable dedication and hard work on behalf of the UK and the rest of the Commonwealth.”

Another said: “I just love her. Such a tremendous woman”.

A third added: “Nice sentiments for people who work tirelessly, behind the scenes on behalf of Queen & country“.

The Queen’s latest engagement comes almost one week after her first engagement in London since her return to the capital.

The Queen, who usually spends the weeks between Christmas and the anniversary of the death of her father in Sandringham, returned to London on February 11.

Last week, the monarch officially opened Royal National ENT Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hospitals in Bloomsbury, central London.

During her tour of the new facilities, the monarch spoke with children wearing paper crowns and undergoing dental appointments.

Appearing in high spirits, the monarch cheered up a boy in a dentist chair, revealing she also wore wire braces during her youth.

Speaking about her experience, she said it happened “a very long time ago.”

She added: “I think it’s worth it, in the end.”
