Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a number of incendiary claims in their two-hour chat with Oprah, but royal insiders have taken issue with a subtle dig the couple made at the Queen. Palace servants are understood to be disconcerted by the “particularly dangerous allegation” the Queen is separate from the institution of the monarchy. A commentator said the remarks have seldom been picked up since the interview first aired.

The Mail on Sunday’s Kate Mansey notes: “They are also concerned by one particularly dangerous accusation that has, so far, been little-noticed.

“This was the insinuation by the Sussexes to Oprah that there is some sort of distinction between the Queen – whom they have been at pains to say is blameless – and the institution of Monarchy itself.”

During the Sussexes’ tell-all interview, Prince Harry, the Queen’s grandson, suggested the monarch has little say in important decisions.

In a clip released after the programme first aired, Harry recalled an incident when he and his wife were invited for tea at Sandringham in January last year.

But the Duke said as they landed in the UK, the offer was rescinded.

He said: “The moment we landed in the UK, I got a message… from the Queen’s private secretary basically saying, please pass along to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that he cannot come to Norfolk.

“The Queen is busy. She’s busy all week.”

Harry went on to say he didn’t blame the Queen for the incident, but instead said she had had received “really bad” advice from courtiers.

Oprah asked: “Doesn’t the Queen get to do what the Queen wants to do?”

And Harry replied: “No. When you’re head of The Firm, there are people around you that give you advice.

“What has also made me really sad is some of that advice has been really bad.”

But royal insiders have hit out at the suggestion the Queen has little control over decisions.

One source told the Mail on Sunday: “Her Majesty can do – and does do – what she chooses.

“The Queen is not some sort of puppet.

“The Queen is the Monarch. The head of the Monarchy.

“The head of the Royal Family. Her Majesty is the institution.

“It’s not run by a sinister organisation, which is what the Sussexes seemed to be suggesting.”

During Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah, the couple heaped praise on the Queen.

Meghan recalled one story where the monarch offered to share a blanket with her during a royal engagement in Cheshire.

The Duchess also said she regularly phones the monarch “just to check in”.
