Queen launches the baton relay for the 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Queen appeared outside Buckingham Palace earlier today to launch the beginning of the baton relay, which will travel across the Commonwealth ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Accompanied by Prince Edward, the 95-year-old monarch was seen smiling and laughing as she placed a special message in the baton, before handing it to Paralympic champion Kadeena Cox. 

The relay will see 7,500 bearers carry the baton across 90,000-miles to all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth over a period of 294 days.

Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox is the first bearer and completed a lap of the Queen Victoria memorial before handing it to the second baton bearer. 

The baton launch is the first major engagement held by the Queen at Buckingham Palace since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

She was joined by her youngest son, Prince Edward, who is the vice patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
