The Queen is expected to give a more personal twist to her traditional Christmas speech to reflect the changes the Royal Family faced over the past year. The late Prince Philip is set to feature widely in Her Majesty’s address, with earlier pictures of the broadcast showing her traditional desk display solely focused on an image of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. But former political adviser Jo Phillips also noted a significant change in one of the symbols she traditionally dons during the speech.

Discussing her sapphire and diamond brooch, Ms Phillips told GB News: “She apparently wore it on her honeymoon photoshoot.

“Interestingly, one of the papers picked up on the fact that it’s swapped from left to right, which is apparently what widows quite often do with wedding rings, they switch them.”

The chrysanthemum-shaped brooch was presented to the Queen a year before her wedding to Prince Philip when she launched the oil tanker, British Princess, in 1946.

Her Majesty donned the stunning piece to mark pivotal occasions throughout her life, including her honeymoon, the birth of Princess Anne in 1950, and her 60th wedding anniversary.

The Queen can also be seen wearing the sapphire and diamond brooch in the picture she chose to display on her desk in this year’s Christmas speech.

Ms Phillips added: “The Queen’s message has become more important over the last couple of years.

“When she spoke to the nation at the beginning of the pandemic, people who were perhaps ambivalent about the Royal Family, have seen against the backdrop of this dithering bunch that calls themselves the Government, somebody who’s actually behaved with great dignity and grace.”

The Queen’s speech will be broadcast at 3pm on Christmas Day.
