The Queen publicly marked the birthday of Sophie, who turns 57 today. The Royal Family Twitter account, which represents the monarch and all working royals who don’t have their own social media handle, published a message on Thursday morning.

It read: “Wishing The Countess of Wessex a very Happy Birthday today!”

The tweet also included an adorable picture of the Countess, taken during an engagement, holding a puppy.

Sophie, who officially joined the Royal Family in 1999 upon marrying Prince Edward, has been described in recent years as the Queen’s favourite.

Over the years, the Countess was reportedly able to gain the trust and affection of the monarch and become one of her closest confidantes.

Prior to the pandemic, a source claimed the Queen often chose Sophie to accompany her to church because she had a soothing effect on her.

Their close relationship became apparent in the wake of the death of Prince Philip in April last year.

Sophie and Prince Edward were seen regularly visiting the grieving monarch in the immediate aftermath of the loss.

The Countess was also the first one to speak to the press on how Her Majesty was doing, telling reporters while leaving Windsor Castle by car the Queen “has been amazing”.

Moreover, Sophie was entrusted to tell reporters after the first Sunday service attended by the royals since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, his passing had been “very peaceful”.

Finally, the Countess shared with the public a very intimate picture of the Duke and the Queen she took while holidaying with them at Balmoral.

Sophie’s support to the Queen continued months after the death of Philip, a royal author noted.

Expert Duncan Larcombe told The Sun in June: “Sophie Wessex has emerged as the Queen’s unlikely ‘rock’ as the monarch adjusts to life without Prince Philip.

“Prince Edward’s wife has – according to sources – made it her personal mission to ensure Her Majesty is fully supported by the family.

“Since the Duke’s death in April, Sophie has driven the 10 miles from her Bagshot Park home to Windsor Castle every few days and most weekends to spend socially-distanced time with Her Majesty.”
