Queen ‘needed to seek solace’ says commentator

Last month the Queen was advised by doctors to rest after a period of frequent engagements. Earlier this month Her Majesty was given the all clear by doctors to travel to Sandringham, her Norfolk home. It is thought the Queen travelled to the house ahead of this year’s Christmas festivities, as royal Christmases are traditionally held at Sandringham. 

Royal commentator Russell Myers spoke on Pod Save The Queen about how the Queen “needed to seek solace” by visiting Wood Farm.

Mr Myers said: “So that was great news, the Queen was cleared to fly in the helicopter over to Sandringham.

“She’d been wanting to plan this mini break, and the reason was she’s essentially wanted to invite the family over to Sandringham for Christmas.

He added: “She wanted to go to the big house and have some meetings with the staff about what was needed in the coming weeks.

“She also spent some time at Wood Farm and that is obviously where Prince Philip, her late husband spent his final years after he retired in 2017.

“I think that tells you The Queen actually needed to be there. She needed to seek some solace.

“I’ve been a particularly tough couple of weeks you’ve been in hospital told by doctors you need to slow down.

“So I understand she’s feeling refreshed, revitalised.”

Wood Farm, is located on a secluded part of Sandringham estate that looks out over the sea.

It houses a relatively modest five-bedroom cottage, where Prince Philip lived almost exclusively during his retirement. 

It is also where the Queen, Philip, and their children have gone to relax for more than 5 decades. 

Because the surrounding marshes give them privacy, it’s the place where the Windsor’s feel most at home.

Since 1988, Royal Christmases have been held at Sandringham.

The Queen and Philip would often travel up to Norfolk a few days before the rest of the royals, travelling by train. 

Due to the pandemic, last Christmas was spent in separate households.
