Queen Elizabeth II was faced with a formidable obstacle in the mid-90s as it became increasingly clear Prince Charles and Princess Diana were not getting on well. During Channel 5’s royal documentary, Charles and Camilla: King and Queen in Waiting, royal commentators reflected on the state of the Royal Family during the controversial divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams insisted the Queen was not happy about the royal couple’s relationship becoming publicly toxic.

He added the Queen had no choice but to instruct them to get a divorce for the future of the monarchy.

Royal commentator Emily Andrews also explained the Queen was aware of the negative impact the couple’s relationship would have on Prince William and Prince Harry.

Ms Andrews said: “Things just got so toxic between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

“It really was toxic to the point they could not even be in the same room together.

“I think it was having a really bad effect on Prince William and Prince Harry.”

The documentary then cut to an ITV news broadcasting in December of 1995 where the broadcaster explained the difficulties of their marriage.

The news broadcaster explained the Queen intervened to instruct the couple to get a divorce.

Mr Fitzwilliams reflected on how the Queen felt about the issue at the time.

He said: “There is no doubt at all that as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, the Queen certainly did not welcome the prospect of divorce.

“But since there was such enmity between the couple, there was absolutely no choice.”

Royal expert Katie Nicholl also explained the divorce of Prince Charles and Diana was unprecedented in history.

She said: “This was unprecedented as Charles, the future king is going to become the head of the Church of England.

Speculation remains as to the reason Prince Charles did not pursue a marriage with Camilla initially.

With some commentators arguing Camilla, at the time, wanted to marry first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles.

Following her divorce from Mr Parker Bowles in 1995, Camilla went on to marry the Prince of Wales in 2005.
