“Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits,” a spokesperson for Her Majesty said in a statement on Thursday. Forced to cancel a trip to Northern Ireland, the 95-year-old had already decided to stop travelling to international destinations five years ago due to her physical abilities.
However, through her reign, the Queen has barely been sick to the extent that she had to miss a royal engagement.
A few years before her coronation, she caught measles when Prince Charles was two months old in 1949 and had to be separated from her baby son.
The first time the Queen was actually admitted to hospital was in July 1982 when she had a wisdom tooth extracted at 56 years old.
In 1994, she was photographed with plaster after it was reported that she broke her left wrist when her horse tripped during a ride on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
The break was not diagnosed until almost 24 hours later when her arm was X-rayed and set in plaster at a hospital.
The Queen reportedly made no fuss about it, brushed herself down and got back on her horse.
Much later, in 2013, she was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital to be assessed and had to cancel a two-day trip to Rome.
The Queen spent one night in the hospital and left thanking the staff and smiling before being driven to Buckingham Palace to rest.

Insiders have said HM suffers from back pain, and also had operations to remove torn cartilage from both knees.
Over the last ten years, the Queen has been more gentle with her legs, missing an investiture ceremony in 2013 due to pain in her ankles or using the elevator when going to Parliament instead of the set of 26 steps of the royal staircase at the Sovereign’s Entrance.
In 2016, it was reported that the Queen and Philip both fell ill with heavy colds.
The Queen was not well enough to attend the Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene church and also missed the New Year’s Day service just days later.

She later described it as a “particularly grisly mixture of cold and flu.”
After an eye surgery in 2018, the Queen kept going and attended royal engagements wearing sunglasses.
In January 2020, the Queen missed her annual visit to the Sandringham Women’s Institute due to a slight cold.
Earlier this month, she was seen for the first time using a walking stick during a public appearance.
However, she later welcomed a group of technology leaders at Windsor for the Global Investment Summit without using the said stick and showing that her health was fine.
