The Queen has been praise as “incredibly stoic” by a royal commentator, as she continues with her public duties and responsibilities in the aftermath of her husband’s death. For her summer vacation, the Queen has recently returned to Balmoral for the first time, which was known as her and Prince Philip’s favourite location.
Royal expert Rebecca English told MailPlus: “It’s the place they loved most together. When you lose someone close to you, suddenly or at a great age and after many years, it’s not the big things that really hit you hardest, it’s the little everyday things.
“Going back to that place where they were happiest, walking along the paths and going to the lochs and having the picnics and the barbeques.
“As Harry once said, Philip was the barbeque king. Doing those things without her husband by her side must be hugely difficult for the Queen.
“Everyone I know who has had a lot of contact with her recently said she is being incredibly stoic and probably the strongest member of the family and maybe being in Scotland will give her the crumb of comfort as well.”
The Queen and Prince Philip annually visited Balmoral for their summer vacation, and are often joined by other senior members of the family.
It is believed that Her Majesty will remain at the Scottish Highlands residence until early October, as she takes a break from her formal engagements.
Balmoral Castle has been in the possession of the Royal Family since 1852, when Prince Albert bought the castle as a country retreat.
It sits in around 50,000 acres of land, where the Royal Family regularly go hunting, fishing and walking.
Prince Philip showed a great amount of interest in the conservation and landscaping of the estate, establishing a vegetable garden and a water garden.
Princess Eugenie described Balmoral as ” a lovely base for granny and grandpa, for us to come and see them up there, where you just have room to breathe and run.”
The day before the funeral of Prince Philip on April 17, the Queen released a personal photo of her and the Duke at Balmoral.
It had been taken by Sophie Wessex during a picnic shortly after her marriage to Prince Edward.

Prince Philip passed away peacefully on April 9 at Windsor Castle with the Queen at his bedside.
He had been due to celebrate his 100th birthday in July but had been unwell in the months leading up to his death.
The couple had been married for 73 years and at the time of his death, the Duke of Edinburgh was the longest serving consort in British history.
In line with both his wishes for a fuss-free service and ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, his funeral was not a state occasion and was attended by 30 close family members.
