It was announced on Friday that Megxit would be permanent, with Meghan Markle and Harry stripped of their royal patronages which they were determined to hang on to. According to an insider, the Queen made it “abundantly clear” to Harry that you cannot be half in and half out when it comes to being a working royal.

The Daily Mail cited the source as saying the monarch told her grandson: “You work for the monarchy, the monarchy doesn’t work for you.”

The Megxit decision was made after conversations between Harry and members of the Royal Family.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty the Queen that they will not be returning as working members of the Royal Family.

“Following conversations with the Duke, the Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the Royal Family.

“While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”

The couple, who are giving a tell-all interview to US chat show host Oprah Winfrey, have lost their patronages given to them by the Queen.

Harry has also given up his beloved honorary military titles, including Captain General of the Royal Marines.

A spokesperson for Meghan and Harry said: “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.

“We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”

Meghan and Harry quit as working royals in March 2020 and the Megxit arrangements were due to be reviewed after one year on March 31.

Royal author Angela Levin insisted the monarch was a “patient woman” but that the Sussexes “crossed a red line”.

She said: “I’m not in the least surprised.

“I think there’s been a lot of rumours that the Queen would do this.

“The Queen as we know is devoted to her duty and to her country…she loves her children and being a grandmother.

“But in the end her sense of duty is more important than grandchildren or children or great grandchildren.

“She wants to keep them close as a family, but they cannot push their luck too far.”

Meghan and Harry, who are expecting their second child, are living in a mansion in California.

Since quitting as working royals, they have signed lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify.
