Kate was given the honour by the Queen for services to the sovereign. It comes on her and Prince William’s eighth wedding anniversary and is likely to be in recognition of her work as a member of the royal family. Last month she stepped out with the Queen for their first joint engagement.

Kate joins the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex in becoming a Grand Dame Cross.

The Queen appointed Camilla as she and Prince Charles celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary.

The news prompted a delighted reaction from royal fans on social media.

Kate joined the royals when she wed William, who is second in line to the throne, in a stunning ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.

Kensington Palace thanked royal watchers for their well-wishes today and shared throwback snaps from the wedding.

The couple met when they were students at St Andrews University.

Kate caught the prince’s eye as she sashayed down the catwalk in a see-through dress for a charity event.

They are now parents-of-three to Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis who recently turned one.
