The Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary of Teck, ordered a Lady-in-Waiting to address her as ma’am. The Royal Family had referred to the then Princess Elizabeth as ‘Lilibet’ since her childhood. Lady Pamela Hicks, a cousin of Prince Philip, spoke about having that privilege taken away from her in a new ITV documentary, ‘My Years With Queen’.
The programme shared that due to feeling unwell after an operation, King George VI asked his daughter to stand in for him on an overseas tour.
Although Elizabeth was by now mother to two small children, she said yes.
She also asked her friend, Pamela, to come along as her Lady-in-Waiting.
In the documentary, her daughter, India Hicks, asked whether, as a cousin, Lady Pamela was still allowed to address the then Princess as ‘Lilibet’ when they went out.
Lady Pamela responded “no”, that this was not the case.
She told ITV: “In England, before we left, I was at a reception and Queen Mary was there.
“She sent for me across the room.
“She says, ‘I hear, my dear, that Lilibet’s taking you on tour with her’.”

Lady Pamela continued: “‘You will be in attendance.
“‘Now when you’re in attendance, you don’t call her Lilibet. You call her ma’am’.”
The former Mountbatten talked about her life growing up within the Royal Family and her close relationship with the Queen.
