Queen fury: Monarch tells Harry he can’t ‘cash in’ on royal status amid heartfelt chat
The Queen and Prince Harry had a four-hour discussion over lunch and tea on Sunday, during which the monarch reminded her grandson he is “much loved”, a source claimed. However, the monarch also wanted to clarify that the arrangement discussed and agreed by the Queen, other senior royals and the Sussexes can only be successful if Meghan and Harry don’t try to “cash in” on their royal connections, the source added.
The unnamed royal source told The Sun: “She also wanted to make it clear that the arrangement can only work if they do not exploit their royal status and try to ‘cash in’ – that’s why she wouldn’t let them use the word ‘royal’ for their foundation.
“The Queen is protecting the institution and she is also aware of the cost of security.
“That is something that still needs to be resolved.”
The Queen also wanted to “make certain” the Duke of Sussex was aware “there were limits and the whole set-up is subject to a review after 12 months”, the source added.
In February, Meghan and Harry announced they did not intend to continue using their current brand name, Sussex Royal, after March 31.
In a statement, perceived by many royal commentators as confrontational and hostile, the Sussexes said: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”
During their long, heartfelt chat, Prince Harry and the Queen are believed to have also spoken about the Sussexes’ plans for the future.
The source said: “The Queen had a lot to talk to Harry about and this was the ideal time for them to both say their piece.
“When Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to quit, it all happened very quickly and it was very stressful for all concerned.
“Sunday was the first time the Queen has had the chance to talk to Harry on his own and really find out what his plans are.
“It was a much more relaxed environment and they were both able to speak their mind.”
The Queen, the source continued, “has always doted on” Prince Harry and made it “very clear” to him that the doors of the palace will never be closed for the Sussexes.
The source continued: “She made it very clear to him that he and Meghan are always able to come back if they change their minds and she will welcome them with open arms.
“Hopefully, the chat cleared the air and the way forward is looking more positive.”
Meghan and Prince Harry are to attend their first joint engagement in two months on Thursday, when they will attend the Endeavour Fund Awards.
The couple have a series of engagements planned, which will culminate with their participation in the Commonwealth service next Monday.
Meghan and Harry’s son, Archie Harrison, is to remain in Canada, according to the source, a decision which left the Queen “very sad”.
Buckingham Palace told Express.co.uk it won’t comment on the claims made by the source.
