Queen's diary 'under widespread review' says host

The 95-year-old monarch was advised by doctors to rest after having specialist tests for an unexplained condition. A royal source said: “The Queen is sad she cannot get out on her horse, which is one of her favourite pastimes, but she is resting and taking every precaution to get back to full fitness. “Winter riding is infrequent in any case but certainly Her Majesty is realistic that she is unlikely to go riding throughout the bleakest winter weather months ahead.

“However she is very determined to be back riding as soon as possible and in no way does she feel her riding days are behind her.”

The Queen has been forced to pull out of attending the UN COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow, where she was due to host a reception for world leaders on Monday.

Instead she will send a recorded video message, while Princes Charles and William host the event alongside their wives. The Queen has also had to forego her daily walk with her dogs – two corgi puppies and a dorgi – for more than a week after being confined to her home.

She stayed overnight at the King Edward VII’s Hospital nine days ago before returning to Windsor Castle to recuperate. It also emerged yesterday that the sovereign, who was pictured on a horse as recently as May, has not been riding for several weeks after suffering “discomfort”.

Earlier this month it was said she had ditched her evening martini to keep her in good health in the upcoming months and years. The head of state is also heavily involved in the planning of the celebrations next year to mark her record Platinum Jubilee.

It was revealed yesterday that courtiers will be taking a “careful and cautious approach” when examining every aspect of the Queen’s diary until Christmas and beyond.

Palace officials will look to create engagements for her, judged on how she is feeling and whether there are long travel implications.

Her Majesty is continuing to take on “light duties” at Windsor Castle, where she is doing some work from home. On Wednesday she held her weekly meeting with Boris Johnson for the first time in three weeks.

The pair spoke by phone following their last chat on October 6.
