Channel 5’s royal documentary, ‘Secrets of the Royals’ discussed a sweet gesture from the Queen after a blunder made by US President at the time, Barack Obama. During a dinner with the Queen, President Obama continued to speak through the national anthem, the documentary suggests. The Queen is then said to have glanced at the President in surprise but politely said ‘thank you’, breaking royal protocol in the process.

Royal documentary narrator Glynis Barber said: “Sometimes even world leaders get protocol wrong.

“This was clear when President Barack Obama spoke over the National Anthem during an embarrassing moment in 2011.”

Etiquette and civility specialist, William Hanson explained where the President went wrong and the awkward exchange between President Obama and the Queen.

He said: “President Obama has asked everybody to stand up, so far so good.

Mr Hanson also explained why royal protocol was so important even in the modern age.

He said: “Etiquette and protocol is so important for the Royal Family because it tells people what to do.

“With the Queen, you would say Your Majesty followed by ma’am.

“With any other member of the Royal Family, it would be your Royal Highness followed by sir or ma’am.”
